How To Promote Your Lead Magnet with Social Media

Updated May 2020

As I wrote in a previous article, one of the best ways to build your list of e-mail subscribers is to offer something of value up front related to the value of your offering.

This email incentive known as an opt-in offer or a lead magnet is something you are willing to give away for free which requires people to provide an email address to download.

Once you’ve created your lead magnet, you will want to promote it and social media is the best way to do this. Here are some ideas for you to try.

Most email management providers already have easy pre-built Facebook Sign-up Tabs for your email newsletters. Here’s a nice clear call to action on the Gap’s Facebook page.

There are many different types of Facebook Contests — the most basic is the “random draw” Facebook Sweepstakes. To run a successful contest, you need to choose a prize relevant to your business, a method of entry (for example providing an email address,) and a plan to promote the contest through an email blast, Facebook ad, and social media.

Facebook Ads to increase website traffic appear as large, clickable images in people’s News Feeds on desktop and mobile devices. They are a relatively inexpensive way to promote your lead magnet as Facebook’s targeting abilities give you an effective way to reach a highly targeted market.

Instead of using Facebook’s basic Events application, a signup form allows you to collect email and other contact information when people RSVP for the event (the Event application does not allow you to collect emails when people RSVP).

Update your Twitter bio to include a clickable link to your lead magnet. Put the link right in your bio not the website link below it.

Like your Twitter bio, your Twitter background provides an excellent opportunity to highlight your lead magnet.

It’s fairly straightforward to change your desktop background. Just follow these steps, as outlined on the Twitter support page, on customizing your profile design.

Use the Pinned Tweet feature on your Twitter account to highlight your lead magnet.

Promoted Tweets are clearly labeled as Promoted when an advertiser is paying for their placement on Twitter. In every other respect, Promoted Tweets act just like regular Tweets and can be retweeted, replied to, liked, and more. Similar to Facebook Ads, you can target followers of specific Twitter handles.

Tools like Wishpond or Woobox make it easy to launch custom sweepstakes Twitter contests and manage entries. For more information read How to Run a Successful Twitter Contest.

Similar to your Twitter bio, your Instagram bio is another key place to add a link to your lead magnet.

This is a super tip from MavSocial. You can film short 10 second videos telling your followers about your lead magnet and direct them to the link in your bio. Or, you can tease your resource through a series of pictures that lead to the big reveal. If you are working with a verified Instagram account, you can use the Swipe up feature in Stories to take your followers straight to that landing page.

Create a video targeting “how to” keywords relevant to your offer. After you upload your video, write at least 300 words of content in the description box below the video. Include a call to action to subscribe to your email list

You can use cards to add interactivity to your videos. Cards can point viewers to a specific URL and show customized images, titles, and calls to action, depending on the card type. Click here for instructions on how to add a card to YouTube videos.
