Why Shares Matter More Than Likes

Most of us instinctively measure Instagram success in likes, comments, or saves. But there’s another metric that carries far more weight: shares.

When someone shares your post, it doesn’t just signal appreciation; it opens the door to entirely new audiences. A single share can extend your reach by hundreds of views, while a like or comment may only add a fraction of that. If growth and visibility are your goals, share-worthy content deserves to be at the heart of your Instagram strategy.

The Three Buckets of Content

Every post you create tends to fall into one of three categories:

  • Promotional content: designed to convert followers into customers, donors, or event participants. Essential, but rarely shared.
  • Educational content: tips, how-tos, and insights. Valuable for your existing audience, but not always compelling enough to pass along.
  • Share-worthy content: explicitly crafted to inspire people to hit that “share” button. This is your growth engine.
